Development Associate - Orange Show Center for Visionary Art

Orange Show Center for Visionary Art is a 27-year-old non-profit arts organization located in Houston’s East End. We preserve visionary art environments, provide opportunities for the expression of personal artistic vision and create a community where that expression is valued. Our programs –- hands-on workshops, Eyeopener Tours, community murals and Art Car Weekend -- help people experience the creative process and teach people about visionary art.



We employ a full-time staff of seven and a volunteer force of 500. The Development Associate works with staff, board and volunteers to drive development activities, manage the volunteer program, and grow memberships. This administrative position supports development of contributions and sponsorships and reports to the Development Director. Position is salaried and full-time.



DEVELOPMENT

Supports development and sponsorship activities for: 1) The Orange Show’s overall development program; 2) The annual gala fundraiser; 3) Houston Art Car Parade, Houston’s largest free event.



• Works with Development Director to write grant proposals and final reports

• Researches prospects for new grant opportunities.

• Enters and maintains donor tracking in database.

• Ensures donor commitments are met in publications, broadcast media, on-site signage, tickets, etc.

• Attends meetings and records minutes. Disseminates minutes and action lists to committee members and staff.

• Works with auction chair and committee to obtain, track, pick up, store, package, display, check out and deliver more than 150 items.

• Generates all auction correspondence, display materials, auction catalog, and internal forms.

• Enters and maintains gala pledges and payments, and auction donations and payments in database.

• Coordinates with staff and committee chairs to: 1) ensure timely delivery of all needed items; 2) identify manpower needs and schedule enough volunteers to carry out set-up, gala, and clean up duties.

• Generates thank you letters.



VOLUNTEERS

• Maintains volunteer program and current volunteer database.

• Oversees logistics: supplies, volunteers, volunteer hospitality, waste management needs; rental needs; entertainment needs.

• Assists in writing descriptions of existing and new volunteer opportunities.

• Identifies Orange Show volunteer needs and opportunities.

• Responsible for supervising volunteer placement.

• Responsible for researching, developing and implementing ways to encourage participation by the uninvolved. Targeted recruitment of diverse populations.

• Assists with sound recruitment procedures. Schedules speaking engagements for recruitment.

• Directs the matching of people with skills and interest to the tasks that need to be done.

• Provides for volunteer training and orientation.

• Develops, recommends and administers budget allocated for volunteer program.

• Creates system of rewards for volunteer program.

• Increases volunteer communication through on-line portion of our website and/or quarterly volunteer newsletter.

• Under staff supervision: Correspondence with community leaders. Provides for staff development and ongoing leadership training for volunteers.



MEMBERSHIP

• Oversees membership database. Oversees member correspondence, prepares thank you letters for signature, mails renewal notices.

• Manages membership outreach and works to develop programs to expand membership base.



ORANGE SHOW STAFF SHARED RESPONSIBILITIES

• Support Orange Show events and projects.

• Participate in board, staff and committee meetings.

• When needed -- pitch in to help the overall cause: give someone a tour of the Orange Show, shop for supplies, take out the trash, make the coffee.





This is an evolving, dynamic institution. Staff members must be self-starting and highly motivated, committed to the mission and comfortable working in a fluid, if not chaotic, environment. There are times that everyone needs to pitch in to make something happen. The rewards come in creating a community where the individual creative process is valued.



Volunteers, artists, donors and public; all have an essential role in fulfilling our mission. Staff members balance needs and desires of each constituent group.



Skills required for this position include: Grant writing experience; computer literacy in a Windows environment; knowledge of all Microsoft Office programs; attention to detail; ability to manage multiple/concurrent projects; ability to work with many different sectors of the community. The ability to stay organized and set priorities is a must. Experience with databases, working with volunteers, event planning, and logistics management will speak highly towards qualification for this fluid, yet key, role.
